It’s gone. A gasification plant on the books for Mission Flats is no more. In an email sent late last night to the media, Aboriginal Cogeneration Plant spokesman Kim Sigurdson says the company is pulling out of Kamloops. The controversial project would have burned old railway ties in a plant at Mission Flats and turned the product into energy. But residents have protested long and hard against the plant, worried about possible air quality problems, despite a permit issued by the Environment Ministry for the plant to go ahead. Sigurdson says the overwhelming public opposition at a forum last week had a profound effect on him, and he’s moving elsewhere. Where that might be is hard to say, but he says he’d like to build the plant somewhere in B.C. MLA Terry Lake had said after last week’s forum he would try to help Sigurdson find a suitable location somewhere in the province where the plant might get a better reception.
